Our current and past performances, from the beginning of SMOKE in it's current incarnation to our current successes and growth. But first, our featured performance this month:

 

September 19 - 2003
Private party. SMOKE opening for Indigenous. With their new self-titled album—their first release for Silvertone Records—the band called Indigenous delivers on the rich promise of previous albums and years of roadwork. On this thirteen-song collection, the quartet of Nakota Sioux Indian family members—brothers Mato and Pte, their sister Wanbdi, and their cousin Horse—transcends its early influences and brings its hard-rocking, blues-based music to a new peak of power and expressiveness.

 

 

Fall - 2000
Nancy Harris was the first spoken word artist honored by the Tulsa World Newspaper with a SPOT MUSIC AWARD nomination for her performances.

 

September, 2001
The present version of SMOKE, was formed by Nancy Harris - Mingo Glass - Tom Henry and first performed together at DOWNTOWN UNDERGROUND - TULSA LIVING ARTS

 

October 26 - 27, 2001
NIMROD LITERARY JOURNAL CONFERENCE & WORKSHOP - University of Tulsa. In addition, Tom Henry performed a special private concert at the midnight VIP supper for the award winning writers who appeared at the events.

September - 2001 through May - 2002
SMOKE performed and conducted workshops all over the metropolitan Tulsa area at schools, social organizations and churches for the WORD PROJECT which was funded by grants from the OKLAHOMA ARTS COUNCIL through THE ARTS & HUMANITIES COUNCIL OF TULSA -

Final WORD PROJECT events took place in spring of 2002 and incorporated young people from the Tulsa area along with adult artists including SMOKE.

 

April 25, 2002
WORD CONCERT - NON-COMPETITIVE EVENT - produced by SWOT at the Greenwood Cultural Center

 

May 9, 2002
SPECIAL WORD CONCERT - produced by Swot at The Thunderbird Academy for the Bravo Company, consisting of high school age students who have this last chance before incarceration in Pryor, Oklahoma -

SLAM - THE WORD POJECT - produced by SWOT at the Nightingale Theatre, Tulsa

SMOKE went into the Longbranch Studios and recorded our new CD, SMOKE

WORD - THE YOUTH PROJECT - receives funding from the OKLAHOMA ARTS COUNCIL through THE ARTS & HUMANITIES COUNCIL OF TULSA - for the Year - 2003

WORD - THE YOUTH PROJECT - receives grant from THE AMERICAN FRIENDS SERVICE COMMITTEE for the year - 2003

Nancy Harris receives the prestigious JINGLE FELDMAN AWARD for her work in the arts.

 

June 28 - 2003
SMOKE CONCERT headlines at RIVERJAM arts festival for hundreds of people at The River City Market. Carlos Moreno and Brandon Foutch join us for this concert.

 

August 31 - 2003
SMOKE CONCERT headlines with a two hour performance at the 51st annual CHEROKEE NATIONAL HOLIDAY at the Tsa La Gi Amphitheater at the Cherokee Heritage Center (seating 1800 people ) - Sunday - August 31 - 2003 - Labor Day Weekend Carlos Moreno, Brandon Foutch and Eric Guinn join us for this great event.


SMOKE is a unique, multi-cultural arts ensemble - a coming together of Native and Mixed-blood artists to spin words, make music and guide the imagination to a higher plane. SMOKE arises from the creative fires of Spoken Word artist, Nancy Harris, Native drummer, flautist and singer, Mingo Glass and contemporary singer/songwriter, Tom Henry. Togeether, and in collaboration with other gifted artists, the ensemble explores new territories of performance art while providing a rich context for commuinity dialogue and education.
