In November of 2002, people of all ages and cultures came together at the Loft coffeehouse for an event entitiled “Poets for Peace”, thanks to Mary McAnally, and the Tulsa Peace Fellowship. Based on the resounding success of this event, Spoken Word of Tulsa was asked to begin a regular series of poetry events at the Loft.
In addition, Spoken Word of Tulsa worked w/ the Tulsa Peace Fellowship, Living Arts, and MANY drumming & dance groups in March to bring together another wonderful event, “Drumbeats for Peace”. We expected between 30-40 people at this event, and were pleasantly surprised when the venue informed us that they logged 120-140 in attendance. The attendance and enjoyment of this event, again, superceded all expectations.
What brought such a positive reaction was the coming together of young and old, Hispanic, Asian, Native, African-American, Middleeastern -- people celebrating their culture, and finding a common ground. Everyone at our last two major events said, “we must do this again!”
Well, we’re giving everyone what they want!
